Building its leadership team to help providers address an increasingly dynamic and complex regulatory environment, ArborMetrix hires Heaton, experienced physician and healthcare leader
ANN ARBOR, MI (MARCH 16, 2017) – ArborMetrix, a leading provider of healthcare technology solutions focused on physician performance, announces that Spencer Heaton, M.D., M.B.A., has been hired as its Chief Medical Officer.
As an experienced physician who understands the business of healthcare and the day-to-day realities of being a clinician, Heaton brings a valuable perspective that will help him lead ArborMetrix in its delivery of clinical analytics and registry solutions for medical specialty societies, hospital associations, and hospitals and health systems. He will provide strategic guidance to ArborMetrix’s team and clients to help them support quality improvement and optimize success with quality reporting.
“ArborMetrix understands the important role physicians can and should take in leading the healthcare industry in creating meaningful metrics in the context of value-based care,” Heaton said. “I’m excited to work with physician leaders in various specialties across the country to help them create clinically relevant solutions that are at the forefront of this demanding environment.”
Heaton joins ArborMetrix at a critical and opportune time, as the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ (CMS) rolls out its Quality Payment Program (QPP) and its Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) in 2017. CMS estimates nearly two-thirds of the 800,000 active clinicians in the United States are eligible for its QPP this year alone. They are required to report on various quality measures to receive incentives (or face increasing penalties starting in 2019).
“Physicians are under increasing pressure to deliver better care more efficiently,” said Kurt Skifstad, Ph.D., Chief Executive Officer, ArborMetrix. “With Spencer on the team, we are even better equipped to support our clients in delivering the critical information and building the physician engagement needed to accelerate improvements in quality, safety, patient experience and cost efficiency, and for driving success in value-based payment models.”
Heaton earned his M.D. and M.B.A. at the University of Michigan, and completed residency training in anesthesiology at the University of Michigan Health System. Following residency, he completed subspecialty fellowship training in pain medicine at Johns Hopkins. He has experience in private medical practice, including founding a comprehensive sports medicine, spine, and pain management clinic.
In addition to his clinical roles, Heaton has experience in medical device and pharmaceutical development, as well as life science venture capital. He most recently functioned as the healthcare team lead for the University of Michigan Wolverine Venture Fund. Heaton is a contributing author for two medical textbooks in the fields of pain management and neurology. Previously, he served as president of the Michigan Society of Anesthesiology Resident Section and as an at-large board member for the Arizona Society of Interventional Pain Physicians.
