New-and-improved registry will drive more quickly to advancing research and outcomes

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Oct. 11, 2017 The Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) announces the selection of ArborMetrix as its technology and analytics partner to power its clinical data registry of patients receiving extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).

ELSO is an international non-profit consortium of healthcare centers and individuals who are dedicated to the development, evaluation, and improvement of ECMO and other innovative therapies for support of failing organ systems in the neonate, child, and adult. ECMO is a treatment that uses an artificial heart and lung to support the body when a person's own organs are too sick to do the job. ECMO itself will not cure a patient’s heart or lungs, but it gives him or her the time needed to heal.

ELSO_CMYK 2017-04.pngELSO Registry has, since 1989, been the world’s largest source of data on patients receiving ECMO. The ELSO community, which includes more than 500 participating centers worldwide, uses the registry to support clinical research, individual ELSO center quality assessment, and regulatory needs for ECMO.

“The ELSO Registry represents a unique ‘treasure’ and resource in the worldwide scientific and medical environment based on the years and patients collected so far regarding the data available,” said Roberto Lorusso, M.D., Ph.D., Chair, Euro-ELSO, and Professor, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Maastricht University Medical Center, Netherlands.

ELSO sought out a new technology and analytics partner to support the registry to help make it “even more powerful for research,” said Daniel Brodie, M.D., ELSO steering committee member and Associate Professor of Medicine at Columbia University Medical Center in New York.

ELSO’s rich history and commitment to quality improvement and research aligns with ArborMetrix’s experience and proven track record of helping providers use data to improve performance and advance care.

“The reliable and robust statistical models and new, user-friendly interface we will provide will allow the ELSO team and community to drive more quickly to answers to questions underlying ECMO,” said Christian Birkmeyer, M.S., Executive Vice President, Analytic Systems, ArborMetrix. “ELSO has a big vision for the future of their organization, the registry, and the treatment of patients receiving ECMO, and we will be supporting them step-by-step.”
