ASA and AQI: Helping providers succeed under MACRA with powerful quality reporting tools

AQI Logo_forweb.pngThe American Society of Anesthesiologists® (ASA®) established the Anesthesia Quality Institute (AQI) in 2008 to facilitate practice-based quality management through education and quality data feedback. AQI carries out this mission by helping hospitals and practices answer important questions about the care they deliver by gathering, analyzing, and providing the data that providers need through the National Anesthesia Clinical Outcomes Registry (NACOR).1

In late 2015, ASA and AQI selected ArborMetrix as their technology and analytics partner to power NACOR and support CMS quality reporting through its Qualified Registry (QR) and Qualified Clinical Data Registry (QCDR). AQI and ArborMetrix launched the new-and-improved NACOR in June 2016.

NACOR is one of the largest registries operating in the United States and has been designated as a QCDR by CMS for MIPS reporting. In 2015, it represented about one-third of all QCDR submissions to CMS, making it the largest registry reporting for PQRS (now MIPS). In 2016, ASA quality reporting participation via QR and QCDR grew substantially to include approximately 17,000 providers.2

“AQI recognizes the burden federal regulation has placed upon practices, and we are partnering with our members and their practices to help them succeed under MACRA,” said DeLaine Schmitz, MSHL, ASA Quality and Reporting Executive. “ArborMetrix plays an important role in helping our members succeed in this environment – and not only because of their technology and analytics. The dedicated support they provide to AQI, and the practices who participate in NACOR, demonstrate their commitment to our partnership and our members.”

Through NACOR on the ArborMetrix platform, AQI provide participating providers with: 2

  • CMS quality reporting
  • Custom continuous performance monitors
  • Performance gap analysis and patient outlier identification
  • Access to improvement interventions to close performance gaps including patient care management tools
  • Targeted education
  • Peer-to-peer benchmarks

AQI results achieved

  • Substantial growth: AQI saw a 220 percent increase in the number of eligible clinicians (ECs) participating in quality reporting since 2015
  • Successful data submission: AQI successfully submitted quality data to CMS for more than 17,000 ECs
